Ski with a Ranger when you visit Lake Tahoe!

The US Forest Service Conservation staff is skiing the mountain every Friday to help educate the public about the mission of the Forest Service in managing public land used for skiing. Rangers spend an hour skiing with visitors, while leading an interpretive tour of Heavenly Mountain, to improve understanding of the issues facing our natural resources, and promote the stewardship of our national treasures.

Ski Heavenly and join the fun each Friday at 1 pm through March 27th.  You will meet up with your ranger at the Tamarack Lodge located at the top of Heavenly’s Gondola. Be sure to arrive early. Groups are small, only 12 skiers each. You need to have a Heavenly Ski pass for the day, and be an intermediate level skier. Heavenly Ski passes will cost some change but the interpretive tour with a Forest Ranger is FREE! For more information about this amazing opportunity contact Eliza C. Escobar at 530-543-2730 or visit

If you’re going… You will need to get to the Gondola located in Heavenly Village on US-50 about two blocks before the California/Nevada state line. Before you can take the Gondola up the mountain to Tamarack Lodge you will need to find parking. Heavenly offers free parking at California Lodge, Stagecoach Lodge, and Boulder Lodge. From these parking areas you can take a free shuttle to the Gondola. Enjoy!

Chocolate Peppermint Holiday Cocktail

Make yourself a Chocolate Peppermint Holiday Cocktail when you visit Lake Tahoe.

Wendy’s Chocolate Peppermint Holiday Cocktail

1 ounce Peppermint Schnapps

2 ounces Creme de Cocoa

3 ounces Baileys

4 ounces water

1 Candy cane (crushed for rim)

1.  Place candy cane in a plastic Ziplock bag and smash it into candy cane dust with a hammer. This is especially therapeutic after encountering a sullen 15-year-old female.

2.  Rim two martini glasses with the crushed candy cane pieces. I used simple syrup and was able to rim the glasses early in the day before company arrived, but water works as well.

3.  Add about 6 cubes of ice into a cocktail shaker.

4.  Add the 3 liqueurs and water into the cocktail shaker and shake vigorously. Strain mixture into the two prepared glasses and enjoy!

*You can also put these ingredients into a Hydroflask, shake, and enjoy. (Skip the crushed candy cane when using a Hydroflask.) This is especially nice while watching the New Years Eve fireworks at 9 pm on the Nevada side of the the state line.*

Basecamp Beer Garden & Outpost Brewing Company – The best sort of funky

Basecamp Beer Garden

Basecamp Beer Garden is a casual beer establishment in the heart of the Casino Corridor of South Lake Tahoe. Its chill “hang out” vibe provides the perfect environment to make new acquaintances when you visit Lake Tahoe.

Airstream Music Stage

In the courtyard you will enjoy live music from the Airstream Music Stage every night during the summer, and when weather permits the rest of the year. Come partake of Open Mic Night on Monday and Wednesday evenings, at the indoor stage adjoining the taproom.

Outpost Brewing Company Taproom

The beer flows unhindered at the Outpost Brewing Company. They offer a nice variety of beers, including a selection of their signature beers on tap and those from other local breweries. Service is always very friendly, and the Beer Garden is extremely well maintained. Check out Happy Hour, it will not disappoint!

Tasty Bar Food

The Outpost Brewing Company provides good bar food with interesting offerings. I recommend trying the Chicken Bratwurst, goat cheese macaroni, and Kombucha on tap. If you are only here for the beer, then grab an order of Pretzel Bites. You can thank me later.

Indoor seating

Seating is abundant at the Basecamp Beer Garden. There is indoor seating at the bar, small tables, couches, and long communal style tables. Outdoor seating includes picnic tables, table groups of four or six, and clusters of lounging chairs surrounding the firepits and game areas.  There is plenty of room for dancing in front of the Airstream Music Stage.

Outdoor seating around fire pit

Basecamp Beer Garden is kid & pet friendly, so bring all your small family members. At the Outpost Brewing Company smoothies and hot chocolate are just what the kids are hoping for. Don’t forget the Pretzel Bites, a snack the whole family can appreciate. Free courtyard activities include corn hole, ping pong, and board games.

Ping Pong is one of the many free activities available at Basecamp Beer Garden

Parking can be a real drag around Basecamp Beer Garden, due to its popular location. If you are not staying at the hotel, I recommend you park at Harvey’s Casino across the street and walk over. Parking is not free but its safe and convenient. Most of the year, you can park in the rear lot of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino for free. You will have to walk an extra block, but it’s Tahoe where the air is clean and the view is spectacular.

Located on the corner of Stateline Ave. and Cedar Ave.

Basecamp Beer Garden & Outpost Brewing Company are tucked back on a side street right against the California/Nevada state line. Take Hwy 50 from South Lake Tahoe toward the Nevada state line. Turn left onto Stateline Avenue. You will find the Basecamp Beer Garden at the corner of Stateline Avenue and Cedar Avenue. The address for Basecamp Beer Garden & Outpost Brewing Company is 4143 Cedar Avenue, South Lake Tahoe, California.
